From Arabic "la savante", but also from latin alma, "nourricière".
The adjective was associated with goddesses of mythology, as well as with the Virgin Mary, "nurturer of Jesus". The English name the universities, "nurturers" students. St. Alma was a Welsh Christian of the sixth century. After the Crimean War, there were several small Alma, following the Franco-British victory over the Russians in 1854 during the Battle of that name.
